⇒ entirely unneeded, superfluous, not belonging (to the matter, event, or group in question):

- X был сбоку припека{{}}≈ X was totally unnecessary (entirely out of place etc);

- person X was an appendage (extra baggage, a fifth wheel).

     ♦ Мы собрались на аэродроме. Я говорю: "Мы"! Уж я-то был сбоку припёка, случайно прихваченный человечек (Олеша 2). We gathered at the airfield. I say "we," but I myself was just an appendage, somebody brought along by sheer chance (2a).

     ♦ "За кладбищем я ее зарывать не буду. Она мне не сбоку-припёку, а родная сноха" (Шолохов 5). [context transl] "I'm not going to bury her outside the cemetery. She's not just a stray that wandered in from somewhere, she's my own daughter-in-law" (5a).
